The PS5 just got a lot more expensive. Here's what that means for buyers.
Sony confirmed in March 2026 that it was raising prices across the entire PS5 range, effective 2 April. In the UK, that meant a £90 jump on every model. The standard disc PS5 went from £479.99 to £569.99. The PS5 Pro moved from £699.99 to £789.99. The Digital Edition now sits at £519.99. These are official Sony RRPs — not retailer premiums, not scalper markups.
For context, the PS5 launched in 2020 at £449.99 for the disc model. British buyers are now paying £120 more for the same core hardware, and the console has never been cheaper to manufacture than it is today. That's not a coincidence. It's a market problem that isn't going away soon.
Why is the PS5 so expensive now in the UK?
The short answer: component costs driven by AI infrastructure demand. Memory chips and solid-state drives — both essential to the PS5's internals — are in unprecedented demand as data centre buildouts accelerate globally. Sony cited "continued pressures in the global economic landscape" in its official announcement, which is a polished way of saying that the supply of NAND flash and DRAM earmarked for consumer electronics has been squeezed out by AI hardware procurement. This is the same reason smartphone prices are creeping up across the board.
This was also the third price increase on the PS5 in the UK — a generation that was supposed to follow the traditional pattern of getting cheaper over time as manufacturing matures. That pattern broke somewhere around 2022 and shows no sign of resuming. Analysts have pointed to AI companies effectively pre-ordering the annual allocation of SSDs, leaving less supply for consumer goods. Until that demand eases, expecting Sony — or anyone else — to cut hardware prices is wishful thinking.
Is it worth buying a refurbished PS5 instead of new?
Yes, for most buyers — and not just because of the price. A professionally refurbished PS5 from a reputable UK seller gives you the same gaming experience as a new unit at a meaningfully lower outlay. The PS5's hardware hasn't changed. The chip running GTA 6 in November is the same AMD Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU whether the box was sealed last week or the console was owned by someone else for a year. The savings gap has widened considerably since April. When new stock was under £480, the difference between new and refurbished was relatively modest. Standard PS5 or PS5 Pro — which refurbished model makes more sense?
Both are worth considering, but for different buyers. Here's the honest breakdown.
- Standard PS5 (disc): New RRP £569.99. The right choice if you play a broad library, want physical discs, and don't have a 4K/120Hz television. The GPU delivers 10.28 TFLOPS — more than enough for every PS5 title released, including GTA 6. Refurbished examples offer the clearest saving over the new price.
- PS5 Pro: New RRP £789.99. Sony's most powerful home console. The GPU steps up to roughly 16.7 TFLOPS — a 67% increase in compute units — and Sony quotes approximately 45% faster rendering in supported titles. It also adds PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), Sony's AI-based upscaling tech, and 2TB of storage rather than 1TB. Worth it if you have a capable display and plan to play Pro-enhanced titles. Refurbished units represent a particularly strong case here: the new price is eye-watering, and a verified Pro in excellent condition costs considerably less.
One important note on the Pro: it ships without a disc drive out of the box. If you want to play physical media, you'll need the optional detachable disc drive accessory. Factor that into your budget comparison.
GTA 6 is coming in November. That changes the calculus.
Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI releases on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — and it is a PS5-exclusive title, with no PS4 version. If you've been sitting on the fence about getting into this generation, GTA 6 is the clearest possible reason to stop waiting. It's also the kind of open-world title that will benefit visibly from the PS5 Pro's faster GPU and improved ray tracing, if that's a priority for you.
UK sales data from May 2026 showed PS5 unit sales dropped by around 50% following the price hike. Demand hasn't evaporated — people still want to play — but the new RRP is deterring buyers who would happily pay a fair price. Sony does sell refurbished PS5 units through PS Direct, but pricing there was also adjusted upward following the wider April price changes.
